All That Glitters, a solo exhibition by Melbourne-based artist Ling marking 10 years in the ongoing conceptual project The Allure of Gold.
The Allure of Gold: All That Glitters explores how value is constructed and perceived in contemporary society. Through this series, Ling reflects on materialism, and the fleeting nature of status. Gold no longer functions as a sign of prosperity, but as a question. By collapsing the distance between trash and treasure, the work invites viewers to reconsider what they consider precious - and to ask whether value lies in the object itself, or in the meanings we project onto it.
Gold here is not wealth; it’s an illusion. A glimpse of what was. A device that exposes how aesthetics, context, and culture assign value, and how quickly that value can vanish. From classical objects such as cars and commercial equipment through to devices for public communication, the exhibition looks at value beyond mere financial worth.
